Students Helping Students

Students Helping Students
McKenzie Lester
There are many students on college campuses wondering where their next
meal is going to come from and some may even be wondering where they
are going to sleep at night. But there are also many students who are aware
of these issues and want to help but don’t know where to start. In this article,
I will be discussing resources students can use to help volunteer and be a
campus ally for other students. Students helping students promotes an inclusive
learning environment and provides more opportunities for students to succeed.

Portland State provides many volunteer opportunities such as the PSU Food
Pantry, Free Food Market, Neighborhood House, p:ear, and Partners for
Hunger Free Oregon. These all have different levels of volunteer effort and
can give students different opportunities to help out different community members
including their fellow students.  For example, students with busy schedules who
still want to give a little time to help out can volunteer at the once a month
free food market, or students who have a couple of hours a day they can spare
can volunteer with the PSU Food Pantry that is open Mondays through Fridays.
There are also ways to help the homeless community surrounding the PSU campus.
Neighborhood house is a constantly moving organization that incorporates volunteers
in helping families, elderly, students, and the homeless in the Portland Metro area.
P:ear creates relationships between volunteers and the homeless by connecting
people together with education, art, and healthy living to promote self worth and
self care. Both of these organizations need countless volunteers and can be small
monthly commitments or daily depending on the volunteers schedule.

All of these organizations give students opportunities to connect with their community
and offer ways to commit as much or as little time as students can give. PSU provides
so many resources for their students in need and just as importantly, they provide
resources for their students to help other students. These organizations make is easy
for students to help their fellow students and community succeed and create as inclusive
of a community as possible.
