3 Ways to Fight Hunger as a Community

As you can imagine, fighting hunger as one person can be a challenging task. It’s a global issue, and it cannot be faced alone. However, one voice can help bring one another together to help keep each other happy and healthy. Here are three ways that you can start making an impact by involving your local community!

Host Your Own Food Drive

Lead in your community by having your own food drive! Before starting, find a local food bank that you would like to work. Each food bank has tips on food safety, what are acceptable items, and which ones are needed the most.

Ask Local Restaurants for Food Donations

Every day, restaurants serve their meals to hungry customers. While these customers are consuming their prepared food, ingredients are waiting to be used in the kitchen. Unfortunately, not every ingredient will be used. At the end of the day, it will be tossed out.
To help lighten the load of unused ingredients, ask these businesses if they have excess food that needs to be taken off their hands. Make sure to get to know them and build connections before asking for leftovers.

Help Protect Federal Nutrition Programs

Federal Nutrition Programs are food assistance programs that help to increase food security and reduce hunger by providing access to healthy food and nutrition education. Each program aims to help different audiences, such as mothers and children, senior citizens, and food banks. This includes the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), and The School Breakfast Program (SBP).
To help protect these programs, reach out to your elected officials in Congress. Whether through a phone call or email, ask your Members of Congress to protect funds for these anti-hunger programs.
