Melody's Angels Celebrating 5 years of Service for the Homeless
Melody and her volunteer group of Angels
The homeless population in Oregon is one that has been increasing over the years. With limited funding for shelters, limited availability for housing and an ever increasing mental health and drug problem, that leads to homelessness, a woman named Melody decided to do what she could to help those in our community that were in need of services. With limited income resources herself, she did what she felt would help the immediate needs of the homeless. That was to provide a meal, with the addition of a smile and kind words.
Five years ago, in December, Melody created a small organization to collect supplies for meals and care packages for the homeless in Portland.
All food and supplies are donated by Portland area organizations and volunteers, that she has coined her "Angels." On one Sunday a month the volunteers gather in donated space to make the packages. The packages always include a sandwich and a hand written note of encouragement. On occasion a meal voucher from Portland Rescue Mission is attached, donated hand warmers, socks, toothbrushes and other personal care products are included.
Packages handed out in different areas of Portland by the volunteers.
The goal was not only to provide food, and a few personal care items that may be difficult to come by, but to also include warmth of the human connection.
Melody's Angels gather to serve meals at the rescue mission, gather coats and supplies for the homeless in addition to the care packages.
Some smaller events but with equal impact, have taken place, where she provides hot coffee on a cold day or on very hot days volunteers have taken cold drinks and frozen treats to protect from the weather.
If you would like to donate supplies, or time to Melody's Angels please email Melody on her Facebook page or Instagram. The meetings are in the Beaverton area but meet downtown to assist in handing out meals are also appreciated.
