Grannies for Justice- Turning Street Theater into Accessible Social Justice Awareness

Portland is a notoriously kooky place; with a slogan like "Keep Portland Weird," you can expect just
about anything walking down the street. Although the city is a haven for many people, there are still huge social justice issues that citizens face constantly within the Portland community and beyond. Within a sea of social justice warriors, these grannies are taking a different approach to shedding light on the issues and sharing support for those seeking equality. There's no age limit to your rage limit.

The Portland Raging Grannies are an offshoot of the International Raging Grannies that been around for around 25 years. The Portland division started in 2010 with the occupy movement. A member of the Portland Grannies told the Portland Mercury that they're, "a group of womxn aged 55 and over who support peace, social justice, human rights, and environmental protection through protest, song, and performance." They use entertainment and costume to gain the eyes of the public, and then inform when they have their attention. The grannies see it as a way to have their voices be heard, even as they age, and use their privileges to create a more just society. 

Their costuming is another layer of their performance, but also strengthens their concept. Society can somewhat forget about the elderly, especially elderly women. Their stereotypical granny costumes puts the message out there that they're old but they're still mad.
