Keeping LGBTQ Progress

The Trump administration is threatening the progress achieved towards recognition, protection, and equality by transgender, gender non-conforming and intersex people. This effort is to create more strict specific definitions as the binary gender at birth, disregarding those who identify as anything else.

Nancy Haque, the Executive Director of Basic Rights Oregon explains that “Saying transgender people don’t exist while attempting to erase the lived experiences of more than two million Americans is horrific...We stand with our transgender community in this terrifying time – and always. We encourage the rest of our LGBQ community to center and uplift the voices of transgender folks and make sure we are doing everything we can to be supportive as a community.”

We need to be stepping forward as a united front, not stepping backwards, especially within the federal government. We need to watch the way that we treat each other on a day to day basis; positivity breeds positivity, acceptance breeds acceptance, and understanding breeds understanding.
