Living Cully: Living with Low Income

Written by Ali McFarland

Living Cully is a fantastic multifaceted organization that works in the Cully neighborhood to assist the citizens in any way possible. Their anti-displacement efforts are extremely notable, and the community support is baffling. They work to protect the low income and minority population from gentrification as businessmen try and take over and raise the price of housing. The Cully neighborhood has worked hard to make the best of a dangerous part of town by putting in parks and community spaces, but now higher class buyers want to move in. There have already been incidents of tenants being displaced from their homes and no longer being able to pay for housing for their families.

Living Cully has been working to secure as much housing as possible to keep it affordable for this community. Hacienda is one of these associated organizations involved in “Living Cully”, and they have made 381 units of housing affordable to these low income families.

In 2016, Living Cully led the “Save The Oak Leaf” campaign. The resident of this trailer park discovered that their owner planned to sell. Not only this, but the new owner planned to evict all of the people that resided there and rebuild rental housing for higher income households. So not only would these people lose their homes, but they would not be able to afford the replacement homes. With the assistance of Living Cully, the St. Charles Catholic Church, and the Legal Aid Services of Oregon, the residents were able to convince their owner to sell to them instead. They were successful in saving the mobile home park and keeping their rent affordable and their families housed. This is only one of many Living Cully success stories. They do amazing work, and deserve all the help they can get. If their cause resonates with you, you can donate at the link HERE and help these families keep their homes. Every penny helps!
