Trump and TikTok

In an era that promotes "cancel" culture, Trump claims he has the authority to ban TikTok from the US which will prevent Microsoft from buying the app from Chinese-owned company known as ByteDance. Trump is concerned that the TikTok may be a national security.

The app has gained popularity in the US, especially during the shelter in place order due to COVID-19. TikTok is one of the most downloaded apps in the IOS and google play store. It was downloaded 315 million times in the first quarter of the year. There is no actual evidence that suggest that TikTok influencers data have been compromised to the foreign countries intelligence services.

TikTok has given voice to racial justice movement in support of Black Lives Matter. Influencers have used their platform as a way to raise awareness of social injustices that occur within the black community. TikTok has allowed videos to go viral on many social media platforms that repost the videos. The hashtag #blacklivesmatter increases awareness and advocacy for the black community and injustices that are named and unnamed social justice issues.

TikTok has been a way for the youth to reach out, relate, and reeducate one another within their communities and beyond. There has been an influx of influencers that have credentials that rank from financial advisors, veterinarians, dietitians, lawyers, law enforcement officers, medical professionals such as registered nurses, doctors, dermatologist, and psychotherapist. Experts in their field offering free advice in a 30 second video has been a benefit during the pandemic and recession. The information and knowledge is accessible and consumable in a way that best suits the learning style of the generation before us.
