Portland Backpack Children Food Scarcity

Helping The Portland Backpack

By Cameron Sheets

Many children go hungry everyday, with little to eat at home. 1 in 5 children in our school community are experiencing food scarcity. The schools have done a good job of offering reduce lunch cost to these students, but what about what they get home? Or on the weekend? Food scarcity in children is not fair, and the Portland Backpack has a mission to help these children after school hours.

Facts:
Renters in Oregon are 7 times for likely to experience hunger than home owners.
Oregon has the 12th highest hunger rate in the US.

The Portland Backpack is a volunteer group that makes sure kids do not go hungry over the weekend. They do an amazing job at providing food for children on the weekends that are experiencing food scarcity. They provide 330 weekend food sacks for children every weekend. They have provided 64,358 meals over their time.

This is a great community based organization that we can look to expand to help food scarcity in our community.
