Travel Portland Homeless Solution

Travel Portland Helping To End Homelessness

Its no secret that homeless around the whole country is a big problem. To many people, Portland has a great number of homeless people. In reality, Portland actually has fewer homeless people compared to other cities, but due to the fact that many of the homeless not having a shelter, it is more visible and tricks the eye.

Due to more and more people moving to Portland, the housing rents and the need for more houses has also contributed to homelessness. When its even hard for people who make a decent living to buy a house in today’s economy, how can we expect the homeless to find a place to live. Based on a study produced by Transition Projects the homeless rate in Portland has increased by 10% from 2015 - 2017. Not only did the homeless population increase in Portland, it also increased in other west coast cities because of affordable housing.
Travel Portland is partnering with Transition Projects, Central City Concern, Oregon Food Bank and Street Roots to find a solution for the homeless. In July 2016, Travel Portland provided a grant to Transition Projects who launched a program to help the homeless access health, shelter, hygiene and housing services. Just in the first year of the program, it helped 173 people find transitional and additional 29 people find permanent hosing. Now in the second year of the program, they have partnered with Portland’s Homeless Urban Camping Impact Reduction Program to help even more fo the homeless with the continuing grants provided by Travel Portland.
