While many public service organizations are working to address the increasing population of those affected by homelessness in the Portland area, Colombia CEO Tim Boyle has decided to put his hand to the task by donating 1.5 million dollars to be spent on a new shelter facility just off of the NW Broadway Bridge and Naito Parkway. On top of having 100 beds, the proposed building would also offer laundry, hygiene, and job skill services. The money will be given to Oregon Harbor of Hope, an organization that is known for championing non-traditional solutions to the problem of homelessness.

It is refreshing to see a business owner from the Pacific Northwest address the problem with generosity rather than bitterness and anger. While not a permanent solution by any means, it is still quite the step to build a new shelter in order to offer more space for a people already disenfranchised. One can only hope that more business owners will take note, and find ways to offer their skills and money to help alleviate homelessness in Portland.
