Did you know that not only are there State advisories against the consumption of fish due to mercury poisoning, but that the number is growing? Fish consumption advisories for methyl mercury now account for over three-quarters of all fish consumption in the US. There are currently 40 states that have issued advisories for mercury on selected water-bodies and 13 states have full statewide advisories for many fish in rivers and lakes. Many coastal areas are also under such advisories.
This graphic shows us the “state” of things with the advisories. It really puts into perspective the situation at hand, and if nothing else, shows us that mercury in fish is an important issue, and one that is unfortunately on the rise.
