Criminal Charges: New Wave In Environmental Responsibility

     In our own lives we make daily decisions which effect large scale communities. As locals to the Portland area, environmental issues are usually in the forefront of conversation and practices. However, this is not always the case in communities around the world. This news story made me happy to know that huge companies are starting to be held responsible for unsafe and environmentally harmful practices.

     While we still have a long way to go in our legal system in order to catch up with where environmental law and accountability should stand, it's nice to know that changes are coming! This story featured on NPR deals with a Wal-Mart store in California and it's negligent dumping practices. The store was ordered to pay $81 million in fines for dumping hazardous waste between 2003 - 2005. The court case took a decade for results, but the fact that accountability is being assigned to large corporations can give us hope that the future of environmental accountability is not too far off.
