Ask Jonathan:

Something that many people need to keep in mind is that change is always a possibility. Although, Portland has changed and the very landscape of the city has changed there is still hope. As a community there is so much that we can do in promoting change and being the start of it. For example, many shelters rely on the help of the community to provide aid for their visitors. Donations that are common goods such as food, blankets, clothes are of greater need than money. If anyone is to donate money to a shelter in the form of a check they can also use it as a benefit for tax purposes. Another reason this is an important aspect is that last year I met a homeless man named Jonathan. Something I won't forget him telling me is that the majority of the time money is used to buy drugs within the homeless community. He also told me how difficult it can be to feel devalued by society and revealed to me the amount of violence that occurs in the streets. The worst part was that often times it comes from people who are not homeless but civilians that project their anger on those less fortunate.

I asked Jonathan that day if there was anything he can change or something he thinks would help the entire community as a whole. His answer was that it starts with having respect to the community because they are people at the end of the day. This was something that was very hard for me to hear because I can't imagine living in circumstances where you do not feel you are seen as a human being. I have never seen Jonathan again except with the few minutes we talked he impacted the way I see this homeless crisis.

Another change that can be possible is providing aid for those suffering with drug addiction and drug abuse. This is something that needs to be implemented on a government level where the State of Oregon takes action in providing aid that is long lasting. Not simply, covering a hospital visit and not providing long mental health care for recovery. This can start with the way we vote, on a local scale within our communities. As voters we need to be more educated and vote for people who also want to help the homeless community or Portland. We also need to hold them accountable for their promises.

Finally, the greatest change begins when we see these people as human beings. That are capable of changing their lives and understanding all they need is help. Sometimes we chose to ignore them or act as if they are not there and that's wrong. They are people who need our help and lives are valued the same as the rest of us. One of my most favorite quotes by an anonymous author is "the person who falls and gets back up again is so much stronger than the person who never fell."

By: Susan Maftey

References:

https://stressedhomeless.weebly.com/get-involved.html

Importance of Community Support

Voting information for the houseless community

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7947675223908591710.post-72346710590019673162021-12-05T19:29:00.003-08:002021-12-08T09:16:05.534-08:00Youth Homelessness Among the LGBTQ+ Community

Youth Homelessness Among the LGBTQ+ Community

1.6 million youth experience homelessness annually, and about 40% of them identify as LGBTQ+.

Homelessness among LGBTQ+ youth are most commonly attributed to familial conflicts.

According to the True Colors Fund, half of the teens who come out as LGBTQ+ to their family get a negative reaction, and 1 in 4 are forced out onto the streets.

Leaving home as a minor is often an offense that warrants legal intervention, so many of the youth who are forced from their homes end up in the juvenile justice system.

Involvement in child welfare and juvenile justice system only makes housing instability more likely for these individuals, and due to the criminalization of homelessness, the cycle continues.

What are some of the steps being taken to support LGBTQ+ youth who are experiencing homelessness?

There are several organizations working to provide hot-lines, safe spaces, youth groups, and drop-in centers for LGBTQ+ youth.

Lesley University has compiled a list of resources, along with more information on the issue.

Click here to visit their site.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7947675223908591710.post-77889322625180568882021-12-05T19:29:00.002-08:002021-12-08T09:15:57.793-08:00Housing Instability and Healthcare

Both housing and healthcare have been the center of a global conversation regarding human rights,

with advocates calling for greater accessibility and equity for both.

In what ways are these two resources connected, and how does access to housing influence healthcare?

According to Oregon Health Authority, various housing conditions affect healthcare differently.

People experiencing homelessness are at greater risk of complications regarding chronic illnesses,

substance-abuse, and behavioral health disorders (such as PTSD).

Homeless children are likelier to have poor health when compared to their housed peers. It could be likened to the popular saying "Home is where the heart is."

So to call someone homeless may indicate to them their sense of comfort and community is tied to one location and structure, that they have lost the inalienable bond of having a home.

Houseless, on the other hand, is a term with less weight attached to it.

It holds none of the same stigma and taboo associated with the term homeless, and it more objectively references the loss of stable housing.

With these reasons in mind, it is not a surprise that many individuals experiencing unstable housing prefer to the term houseless.

While this term hasn't become widely accepted as the standard in the conversation regarding the housing crisis, the distinction between a house and a home is important to make when discussing the lived experiences of those suffering from the consequences.

Visit https://dogoodmultnomah.org/ for more information and resources.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7947675223908591710.post-63280994846969663762021-12-04T19:31:00.002-08:002021-12-08T09:15:40.666-08:00Communities Making Recovery A Possibility
Community Making Recovery A Possibility

It's a deep thought; to think just how much our world has changed in these last two years. Life, as we had known it before, becomes a sweet memory. The kind we hope to one-day experience and live in again. For many people, the pre-pandemic life isn't the only memory they hope to one day return to it's; also one where their lives have stability and a place of their own becomes a home. It's no secret that the city of Portland has become known for its homeless crisis and is a home to thousands of homeless wanderers.

There are various circumstances that contribute to the loss of stability that breaks down an individual's life foundation and can force them to have a completely different life outcome than they had intended. The most difficult aspect in overcoming such circumstances and returning to build stability is doing is alone.

The community has become that helping hand too wanderers and the engine that can kickstart the road to recovery. I came across this when I was able to speak with staff members of local shelters that shared with me just how much the community can do for a person.

My initial thought was to ask questions about the individuals at shelters and questions they may have. I never expected that community questions would be more dominant and become the common questions that shelters receive. Every person I had spoken with had shared with me the role of the local community and how it enables individuals to recover. People call in daily to multiple homeless shelters asking what the needs are and fulfilling ones within their power.

The majority of shelters survive because they are funded by the local community, not the state of Oregon or even the federal government. It's purely a community effort that provides resources homeless individuals and families require to get on the road to recovery. Donating goods, such as blankets, diapers, food, tents, clothes, toothbrushes, women hygiene products, etc.. are just some of the steps the community takes in making a difference in someone's life. Another product of success according to various shelters is the homeless community witnessing the transformation of one of their peers. Meaning when they see someone's life change who was in a similar situation as themselves they are encouraged to keep moving forward.

In order for something to change you it must be challenging. The combination of mental health issues and drug addictions are one of the most greatest challenges on the road to recovery. In a study conducted on the Portland homeless community of 2016, it was discovered around 35-50% were affected by mental illness and even more from drug addictions. Many of the shelters make it a golden "rule" that drug use is not permitted and addiction must be broken for long term residency. Progress is being made even though the state is not doing enough in aiding with mental illness and drafting policies to confront drug abuse.

Another part of recovery from shelters comes in giving an address where people are able to use to seek jobs. This opens the door for many to feel a sense of hope in getting back on their feet. Local shelters also partner with local businesses who are willing to hire such individuals and give them an opportunity to work.

Finally, a message that came across was that many people consider themselves to be "houseless" and not "homeless". The reasoning being that they are able to build a "home" with their community and others like themselves. The community truly does make an effort to make recovery a possibility many can hold onto and return to days of a more stable life.

References:

2016 Study

Take a look at a list of questions collected from local Portland shelters:

Good Neighbor - Collected Data

A Home For Everyone- Collected Data

Dignity Village - Collected Data

City Team Portland - Collected Data

BY: Susan Maftey

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7947675223908591710.post-4379705015809054372021-12-04T17:42:00.002-08:002021-12-08T09:15:33.282-08:00Trauma and Homeless Children

Homelessness results from extreme poverty, lack of affordable housing, decreased government support, and domestic violence. Children and families experiencing homelessness results in the loss of a community, routine, privacy, and security. They are more vulnerable to other forms of trauma such as physical and sexual assault, witnessing violence, or separation. The stresses experienced with homelessness can worsen other trauma-related difficulties and interfere with recovery.

Homeless children suffer twice the rate of other children and go hungry twice as often as non-homeless children. Mothers experiencing homelessness are poorer in health and their children are more likely to suffer from health problems compared to housed and/or low income children due to limited access to healthcare. Homeless children suffer from chronic illness and acute illness at twice the rate of the general population. Another prevalent health issue stems from food insecurity, homeless children have worse physical and mental health, developmental delays, and poorer academic performances.

According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on a single night in January 2008, families with children comprised 38% of shelter and unsheltered people in the United States. From October 2007 to September 2008, 1.6 million people came to a shelter or a transitional housing program and 516,700 were a family unit. Families lose privacy in shelters and have to adhere to new rules and regulations, disrupting and upsetting family hierarchies. Homeless families are more likely to live in unsafe neighborhood in condition that are unhealthy and unsafe. 50 percent of children without homes are under the age of 5. Lastly, children without homes have more school absences which compromises their academia and self-esteem.

If you are interested in helping families to transition out of homelessness, click the link provided on Portland Homeless Family Solutions to see their programs and getting involved.

http://www.pdxhfs.org

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7947675223908591710.post-66837594592196790032021-12-04T15:06:00.003-08:002021-12-08T09:15:09.098-08:00Homelessness and Addiction

The National Coalition for the Homeless stated that substance abuse can be both the cause and the result of homelessness, and that many individuals start to abuse alcohol or drugs after losing their home to cope with their situation. Homeless individuals are unlikely to get the security or financial stability if the substance abuse is left untreated. Having a substance use disorder can make it difficult to find housing due to some assistance programs requiring residents to pass drugs tests or completing a drug treatment program before they can qualify for housing.

According to recent studies from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), about 38% of the homeless are dependent on alcohol, and 26% abuse drugs. The studies also showed that older homeless individuals are more likely to abuse alcohol, while the youth struggled more with drug addiction. Substance abuse is a major contributing factor for many people becoming and remaining homeless. Once the substance dependence forms, users become deep-rooted in substance abuse, creating a downward spiral.

Drug addiction and alcohol abuse will take over a person’s life, causing struggles within personal relationships, employment, and finances. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, individuals living in shelters are more than twice as likely to have a disability compared to the general population.

Health and homelessness go hand in hand because a physical or behavioral health crisis may lead to homelessness which can then worsen the chronic medical conditions. An individual can become chronically homeless when their health condition becomes disabling and housing becomes too difficult to maintain without proper help. Conditions such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and mental health problems are found at higher rates among the homeless population. Those who experience homelessness and have mental health and substance use disorders are more likely to have life-threatening physical illnesses while living in dangerous conditions. Behavioral health issues, having no shelter, and dangerous living conditions exacerbate their conditions.

How do we move forward?

We need more housing programs. Homelessness is the product of a broken housing ecosystem. Communities used to have plenty of affordable housing and when a family or individual experienced a crisis that resulted in losing their home, they could quickly find a place to live. However, the supply of low-cost housing has shrunk, rents have continued to rise and lower-income individuals have experienced a slow wage growth.

In a healthy housing market, housing units available will match the number of those seeking a home. However, our housing ecosystem is under functioning by the underproduction of affordable housing. Without enough housing units, families will be forced into long periods without a stable place to live. Underproduction of affordable housing pushes rent to high levels, which will push more and more people into homelessness.

What are some of the solutions that will combat homelessness?

Connecting people experiencing homelessness to housing and services, having policies that provide more housing units for low income individuals, and building more homes for people of all income levels.

There are homelessness-focused housing models for homeless assistance programs:

Permanent supportive housing: Pairs long-term rental assistance with support services. Youth experiencing homelessness are challenged by personal trauma or sexual orientation. The trauma received by homelessness, even short term, has a major effect on a youth’s future development. They have higher rates of emotional, behavioral, and longterm health problems. Youth experiencing homelessness are at risk for substance use and abuse, suicide, academic difficulties, and other negative outcomes.

What are some risk factors associated with the rise of youth experiencing homelessness?

Mental and substance use disorders, poverty, and the lack of educational employment opportunities are common for youth homelessness. Family conflict and being too old for foster care or juvenile justice systems play a significant role. One in ten young adults ages 18-25, and one in thirty adolescents ages 13-17, experience a form of homelessness unaccompanied by a parent or guardian. This makes the unaccompanied youth’s search in finding a place to live difficult to find.

Youth who are part of the LGBTQ community, those who identify as lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, or queer disproportionately experience homelessness.
Why It Happens:

According to The National Network for Youth and The National Coalition for the Homeless,

Common contributing factors to youth homelessness include:

family conflict + rejection

youth may have issues with their parents/guardians including abuse, addiction, neglect, or rejection in response to their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression

economic struggles

financial crises within the youth's family can lead them to be separated from their family by shelters, transitional housing, or child welfare policies

residential instability

common among low-income families, a lack of affordable housing, employment, etc., leaves many youths forced to find their own form of shelter outside of their family dwelling

"opportunity youth" or "disconnected youth"

being disconnected from education, employment, or social support may lead to youth homelessness

Subpopulations of youth and young adults that are at a higher risk of homelessness include BIPOC, LGBTQ+, young parents, those who have been in foster care, juvenile detention, jail, or prison, and those who did not complete high school.

Lasting Effects:

Homelessness can leave even more damaging, longer-lasting effects on youths than adults because they are still in a developmental stage, according to Covenant House.

Many homeless youths are also more likely to prioritize daily survival over deeper health problems, nutrition, or personal hygiene — which can lead to more acute and chronic health issues — because they had long been dealing with stress or poor health in their previous living situations. Homeless youths are also prone to engage in unhealthy coping behaviors and experience mental health issues including depression, anxiety, substance use, and PTSD.

*How to Help:

Right here in Portland, there are several organizations that provide different kinds of support for the many different needs youths who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness have; this also means that there are several ways for you to help fight youth homelessness too:

However, a study conducted in Portland by Portland State University and Sisters of the Road found that nearly 50% of homeless individuals contracted and developed staph infections, scabies, endocarditis (a life-threatening inflammation of the inner lining of the heart's chambers and valves, usually caused by an infection), and urinary tract infections due to unreliable hygiene resources.

Some of these issues stem from a plain lack of resources, while other issues stem from areas of discrimination. For example, some individuals surveyed in the study stated that they would sometimes be granted a key to a business's restroom after they purchased an item, but not always, even when making a purchase. It was clear that the cleaner someone's appearance, the more likely they were to be offered the restroom key.

These aren't the only hardships they faced though. When denied access to public bathrooms, these individuals would then be left to relieve themselves outside. This led to 20% of those surveyed explaining they received a citation at least once, and 40% had mentioned being harassed by police or private security officers. The conclusion of the study was a significant need for accessible showers, toilets, and laundry services for those without housing. This could be accomplished by either placing one large facility in the downtown area, or scattering several smaller locations across the city.

Of 550 homeless people surveyed:

40% use public bathrooms in City Hall, Libraries and Pioneer Square Mall

33% use the Portland Loo

32% use the limited shelter restrooms.

21% have been denied access to food or services because of hygiene

22% were turned away from shelters because of hygiene

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can learn more here.

To learn more about Sisters of the Road and support them, go here.

Information gathered from Sisters of the Road and AlliancePoverty.org

Post by: Jimmy Lyons
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7947675223908591710.post-12375063386645238862021-11-30T15:42:00.012-08:002021-12-08T09:33:58.198-08:00Super-Abundance and Want: Confronting Contradictions in US Housing and Food Insecurity

The US has a super-abundant society. And yet in spite of our abundance, we leave people on the margins with a constant struggle. In both housing and food security, our abundance and our neglect create a contradiction in values and in lived experiences.

By the end of 2021, the US population will be approximately 333 million [1]. We also have an estimated 142 million total housing units [2]. Millions of these are not actively occupied - the current total for actual households is 132 million [3]. Assuming the 10 million surplus housing units can be occupied at an average rate (2.53 people for household), that's enough housing for an additional 25 million people. Evaluated another way, if we assume 2.53 people per household for the total 142 million, we should have enough housing for 359 million people - 26 million more than the total US population. Either way we reckon it, we have an abundance of housing units here - in fact, our surplus housing units is over 2/3 the total number of our northern neighbor Canada, which has around 14.6 million housing units [4].

And yet, we have nearly 600,000 people experiencing homelessness in the US [5]. If we described that figure on its own, and described the programs struggling to address homelessness on limited budgets, we might imagine a crisis based in scarcity. This scarcity mindset resonates with most working-class people; overall our wages have been stagnant or worse, as we struggle to pay ever-increasing rent or (if we're fortunate) to pursue ever-more-competitive home-buying opportunities. But the scarcity is not in housing itself - we have an abundance of structures built to house people. We simply don't have an accepted, effective method of dedicating our existing, abundant housing to those experiencing homelessness. The problem is not scarcity, but a contradiction in our economic system and the social values embedded in it. We evidently value building abundance, but not sharing it. We prioritize profiting from structures, not supporting and fostering communities.

The situation with food is even more contradictory. According to the USDA (as cited by Feeding America), 38 million people in the US are food insecure. And yet the US wastes nearly 40 million tons of food every year - estimated to be thirty to forty per cent of the entire US food supply [6]. We not only have abundance visible in our supermarkets but also abundant waste: food sent to landfills or left in the fields unharvested. The contradiction here is systemic, but again it is also a contradiction of values. We emphasize quantitative production and define 'consumption' in terms of purchasing, even if what is purchased is wasted. This is a problem of economic myopia; by defining food solely in these stultified terms we exclude the balance of sustainable production and actual consumption for use (not just purchasing and discarding) that would be optimal utilization of our resources. We also fail to use our superabundant food-production capacity to actually prevent hunger - our system seems to be more tuned to trash what it creates than to share it.

From the tension of this contradiction, we can pivot to a fresh outlook on homelessness and hunger: an outlook rooted in the reality of our abundance, and a determination to make our existing abundant resources available to those who need them most. Many non-profits and government programs have moved in this direction in recent years, focusing attention on redirecting existing resources to those in need. Here are a two that stand out to me:

Urban Gleaners is a Portland non-profit that rescues food from local restaurants and groceries and delivers it to people in need.

Project Turnkey is a project administered by the Oregon Community Foundation using state funds to acquire existing hotels/motels for use as non-congregate shelter for people experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness.

I urge you to visit and support these two projects, and also look for more projects in your community that leverage our existing abundance to support those in need! The idea of 'abundance mindset' gained currency a few years back in management; the same mindset should be part of transforming our society to address hunger and homelessness. After all, as a society we have more than we need already - if we can only overcome the structures that prevent us from sharing that abundance.

Sources:

[1] U.S. Population from Census Population Clock, https://www.census.gov/popclock/

[2] Total housing units in the US https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/ETOTALUSQ176N

[3] Number of households in the US: https://financesonline.com/number-of-us-households/

[4] Number of housing units in Canada.: https://www.statista.com/statistics/1072334/number-of-homes-canada-timeline/

[5] US Homeless population: https://endhomelessness.org/homelessness-in-america/homelessness-statistics/state-of-homelessness-2021/

[6] Food waste and food insecurity: https://www.feedingamerica.org/hunger-in-america

Author: Christopher Corbell
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7947675223908591710.post-9182607210600101642021-11-21T20:45:00.001-08:002021-11-30T11:18:28.593-08:00The Rise of Homelessness Among the Elderly

As much as I see the youth and young adults living on the streets or in tents, there has also been a recent site of the homeless elderly during the pandemic. However, while the homelessness among the youth is much more prevalent than the elderly, research shows that any level of homelessness among the elderly are concerning.

Between 2010 and 2020, cases show from the Homelessness Research Institution that there has been a dramatic increase in the elderly homeless population between ages 50 to 64. Researches found that the homeless population ranging from ages 50 or over in San Francisco went progressively from 11.2% to 32.3% between 1990-1994 to 2000-2002. And, data from New York City indicates that the median age of the homeless population went from 28 to 42 years of age from 1987 to 2005. Studies predict that homelessness among the elderly will increase substantially over the next decade.

Two demographic factors that contribute to the increase of the homeless elderly population is the overall growth of it by 33% between 2010 and 2050, and the relative stability in the proportion of the elderly population facing economic vulnerability, with poverty being the most common. In short, the elderly homelessness is the result of an inability to afford housing. Studies show that there were over 969,925 elderly people, or 2.3% of them, in deep poverty in 2008. And according to the American Community Survey, 9.9% of people over 65 years of age had annual incomes below the poverty threshold of $10,326 for a single person and $13.030 for a couple.

The aging homeless may have also been dealt with multiple medical and mental issues that get untreated. Exposure to harsh weather and the unhealthy shelter environment can affect the health and well-being of the elderly population. Mental health is also very important when researchers examined the reasons behind their homelessness. Some mental illnesses, such as memory loss as an example, can affect the ability to secure housing as acquiring housing often involved multiple appointments and self-initiated persistence.

What else we can do to decrease the population is by prioritizing federal housing programs to reduce the economic hardship experienced by the elderly whose only income is often Social Security and/or Supplemental Security Income. The federal housing policies should be expanded and adjusted in order to meet the needs of poor and vulnerable aged Americans. An alternative to it will be to promote intensive housing and service needs to those who are 50 to 64 years of age who are chronically homeless. In addition, the elderly homeless will often require intensive service coordination in order to help them transition into permanent housing smoothly and ensure that they remain there.

For more details on the rise of the elderly homeless and how to deal with poverty, go visit the National Alliance to End Homelessness and their elderly homeless report to learn more.

Donate: End Homelessness
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7947675223908591710.post-36736725111722030802021-11-20T08:58:00.002-08:002021-11-30T11:18:40.331-08:00Winter effects the Homeless

Winter is rolling into Oregon, along with the holidays, and it can get below freezing this time of year.

Those who can afford to turn up their heat, will do so. are just a couple examples of costs which have increased substantially
over time, often outpacing wage growth and inflation. Subsequently,
student loan and mortgage debt are very common amongst Americans. A 2019
study published by TD Ameritrade of over 1,000 participants found that 47% of them attributed major financial stress to the rising cost of living. Furthermore, survey answers from over 19,000 American adults yielded that for 60% of them, thinking about finances gave them feelings of anxiety. The American Psychological Association's Stress in America 2020
study found that not only is money a significant stressor for 64% of
their participants, but that financial stress also disproportionately
affects lower income Americans. No matter how you look at it, the
results are clear. Many, many people in the United States feel stress
and anxiety around money.

Given
the rising costs of living, it is no wonder that many Americans have
these feelings regarding finances and debt. Research has consistently
shown that this is a leading cause of stress in the United States, and
for those without adequate access to shelter, nutrition and healthcare,
these negative effects will likely only become amplified. Many of the leading causes of homelessness
are related to money, poverty, and unaffordable housing. Because of
this, it's reasonable to assume that these feelings of financial stress
and anxiety have a very heavy affect on houseless individuals.

If

If you go to a grocery store, you can see various kinds of groceries, from fresh foods to frozen food, beautifully displayed in the large store. In the USA, which has vast lands and is thriving in agriculture, most people are comfortable with food, and on the contrary, is more than the necessary amount of food around us.

We are happy to have a lot of food, but it's also true that we are producing a lot of "Wasted Food."

I would like to explain the difference between Food Loss and Food Wasted. According to FoodPrint, Food Loss is a large category and includes all food such as crops left in the fields and damage caused during transportation, including food discarded in our homes. This includes food leftover after the reservation is canceled at the restaurant. On the other hand, wasted food mainly has leftover food from each household and food waste when preparing meals.

Surprisingly, about 40% of all food is discarded in the United States, with 125 to 160 billion pounds discarded each year. This tremendous amount of Wasted Food threatens the upcoming food crisis and is heavily involved in climate change. When we waste food, we waste the energy and water needed to grow, harvest, transport, and pack. And it's also true that while some people are wasting food, they aren't able to supply it to those in need, such as homeless people. As a result, they do not have enough food and nutrition, and many suffer.

We need to think seriously about what each of us can do about the wasted food problem.

The EPA (the United States Environmental Protection Agency) mentioned that the benefits of reducing wasted food have a significant impact on our lives and help many those who need food.

For example:

1. Save your money by buying food in a planned manner

2. Reduce the amount of methane gas produced when producing food

3. Conserves energy and resource.

4. Donate wasted food to people who don't have stable food, such as homeless people.

So, what can we do to reduce the wasted food?

First, plan your shopping. Those same people live that nightmare on a daily basis. They go through many hardships many of us can't even imagine. Being homeless has side effects that many of us never will see. Mental illness is experienced by one-third of the homeless community and it's not hard to see why.

For those who experience homelessness, every day is one of struggle and hardship. Finding a place to sleep, food to eat, or even shelter from the outside world. These struggles of finding basic human needs takes a toll on one's health and mental well being. Not only do they have to survive with nothing but many will also battle substance abuse, crime, and even domestic violence.

Many people become homeless as a result of many different factors such as the loss of a loved one, a relationship breakdown, substance abuse, economic instability, and much more. People without a strong support networks can have trouble processing these traumas or have trouble coping with addiction. Since there aren't many places were the homeless are welcome, many of them will spend their days alone.

Rates of depression and suicide are amongst the highest in those who are homeless.
