Minorities Significantly Impacted By COVID-19

Current data suggests that minorities are impacted by Corona in much larger numbers than what is representative to the population. This may be from socioeconomic factors such as having to work jobs that are not able to social distance or work from home. Jobs that do not give their workers paid time off also put their employees at risk of being in contact with the virus as they are more likely to go to work sick as they can’t afford to lose the money. It doesn’t help that unemployment for many have not provided financial relief as unemployment was unprepared to deal with the sudden influx of applications.

Other factors in why minorities are impacted by COVID-19 harsher is that minorities are more likely to live in population dense areas, further away from grocery stores which prevents stocking up, and possibly not having health insurance.

The Coronavirus really shows where in our society we are failing to help those in less fortunate situations. Minorities already have to face enough as is and now have to face an even more challenging way of life as COVID-19 continues to spread.
