US Women's National Soccer Team Stands Up For Women's Rights

A huge issue outbreaking in our world today is Women’s rights and gender equality. In high school, I was asked to write a research essay about women’s rights. At this time, the United States Women’s Soccer team had just announced their dispute with the league about not getting paid enough. So that is what I decided to write my essay on.

It has been years since I wrote that essay and since I have heard anything about the women’s soccer team and their “Equal Play Equal Pay”. Friday March 8th was International Women’s Day, and it is also the date that a new article about the USA women’s soccer team and their battle for equality hit the internet and reignited my attention.

On International Women’s Day 2019, every woman on the US women’s national soccer team filed a gender discrimination lawsuit against the United States Soccer Federation. The women have argued that they are forced to play more games in a season than the men’s US team, yet they are paid nowhere near as much as the men. They have also brought to light that they bring in a significant amount more money to the league than the US men’s team because they also have more wins under their belt. Their discrimination goes as far as to affect not only their salaries but also their travel, training, coaching, and medical treatment.

This is such an important topic for people to read about because we never hear about these types of stories on the news. But these are the stories that are going to help women all over the world fight for what they believe they deserve. Discrimination against women and women employees is something that every woman can relate to and understands on some level, and it is incredibly empowering to see young, determined, and successful women like the US women’s national soccer team fight for their equal rights and equal pay. These women are being incredible role models and they are setting an amazing example for all young girls out there.

Women all over the world should read into the US women's soccer team and their battle with equal rights because these women have continuously fought for the rights that they deserve and they continue to keep their spirits high and work hard every single day, which is something that we could all practice when trying to strive for what we believe in.
