IMMIGRANT OR REFUGEE?

IMMIGRANT OR REFUGEE?

BY GABRIEL CONTRERAS

A hot topic today has been Immigrants? Who is one?  How do they look like? What do they want?

There are people all across the world trying to be better. But some are not as fortunate and have to make a difficult decision to leave their home country.

Why?

For some its search for safety, others for better lives and most its looking for both. Some other factors can be looking for jobs or an education to better themselves they are usually called migrants—and people who want to live permanently in another country—immigrants.

There has been a lot of confusion and debate over the use of terms to describe the plight of those on the move. Here’s a closer look at the distinct differences between a refugee, and immigrant

Who is a refugee?

A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her home because of war, violence or persecution, often without warning. They are unable to return home unless and until conditions in their native lands are safe for them again.

Who is an immigrant?

An immigrant is someone who makes a conscious decision to leave his or her home and move to a foreign country with the intention of settling there. Immigrants often go through a lengthy vetting process to immigrate to a new country. Many become lawful permanent residents and eventually citizens.

Regardless of terms, the motifs on leaving aren't something one wants to do. Going to a foreign country with people you don't know and a language you don't speak. But one thing is certain these people are like everyone else they want what's best for there family and children, getting them the best opportunity they can give them. In most cases getting out of a situation that is life threatening to them or family is a must. Others its having to flee because where they are living isn't as safe as it once was so finding shelter is there the only option.
