Ted Wheeler Takes Notice

Portland Mayer Ted Wheeler

Ted Wheeler the Portland Mayor finally spoke up against the percentage of homeless people who are getting arrested since last year. According to the article posted few months ago by The Oregonian, almost 52% of arrests were made up of homeless people. It is truly a shocking number based on the fact that the homeless only make up 3% of the population. This stat  alone shows how much a problem this is for our police departments. Rather than actually trying to catch criminals who are doing robberies or other types of crimes, they are busy arresting the homeless. Homeless people are already fighting against our system to survive. By putting them in jails and infant of juries, we are wasting our time because at the end of the day, they should be at another place where they can be helped on an individual level. Although that the city of Portland as increased its funding for the Behavioral Health Unit for the police, it should be using that funding to open more social service center for the homeless where they can be helped rather than be taken to the jail immediately.
