Buehler's Plan

Chronic homelessness is obviously highly visible in Portland (and other surrounding counties), especially to those that live in the downtown area. But have you ever thought about homelessness in other parts of Oregon? Knute Buehler, looking to become the state's next governor, wants to end the entire state of Oregon's homeless crisis by 2023, and according to his guest piece in The Oregonian, has a seven point plan to do just that. Buehler has laid out a number of proposals that he says will accomplish this lofty goal within five years of assuming office: the establishment of a Chief Homeless Solutions Officer; this person will be responsible for making sure all federal, state, and local policies are on the same page regarding priorities and goals, more accessible Medicaid at the street level, and the construction of 20,000 housing units, among others. It is also important to remember that, at this time, candidates are looking for our votes, so of course they are saying all the right things. They know the hot-button issues that will get our attention. We will just have to see how it all pans out starting in December and beyond, whoever is governor at that time.
