The EPA recommends that adults eat only 6 ounces of fish per serving, and that children only eat 2 ounces. This serving size is the equivalent of about one palm full (not including the fingers), or about the size of a deck of cards. Notice that children’s portions are only 1/3 of adult portions. Because of the more serious effects on the brain and nervous system of small children when it comes to fish – less is more.
However, the omega-3 and protein in fish is also very beneficial for developing brains. So it’s essential to either add supplements make sure they are getting the proper nutrition from other sources, or monitor fish consumption closely. Balance is key; it’s important to monitor what we are putting into our own bodies, and the bodies of our future leaders.
