Christmas Tree PVC?

Are you planning on buying a Christmas tree this year? And if so, what kind will it be?

Artificial trees may seem like a ecologically viable investment at the outset. They don't rot or drop needles in your living room, and can be reused from year to year. However, this is not necessarily the case. Even if you do manage to get all the parts put away and ready for use next year, most fake trees are made from PVC plastics, in Chinese factories. Some even have warnings to wash your hands after holding, due to danger to pregnant women!

On the other hand, tree farming plants millions of trees each year, producing oxygen and supporting local economies, and trees can be fully recycled. No matter how you look at it, this is the greener way.

And depending on where you live, there may be a third option as well. For those of us here in Portland, there's a live Christmas tree service that will deliver and pick up your tree before and after the holidays and replant it. So if you are going to buy a tree this year, consider your options!

And however you celebrate (or even if you don't!), we wish you have a safe and happy holiday season.
